Royal Oak Cast Iron Fireback

After his defeat at the Battle of Worcester, Charles II, when Prince of Wales, hid in an oak tree to escape from the Roundhead troops. The oak tree in question was at Boscobel in Shropshire.  Charles returned to England as King on 29th May 1660 and on that day his supporters wore oak leaves and decorated their houses with them.  Ever since,  May 29th has been known as Oak-apple-day.

The design of this fireback with the crown and initials of the king has also been used as an inn sign.
