Heating
The traditional stove is ideal as a room heater therefore when choosing a stove
you will need to know what heat output you will require to heat your room to a comfortable
level. To calculate this output use the formula below or click on the 'Calculate Heat Output' button
for it to be worked out for you.
If you work in imperial measurements, measure the length, width & height of your room. Multiply these
measurements together (L x W x H) and the result is the amount of cubic feet. Multiply this
figure by 0.028368 the convert it to cubic metres. Divide cubic metres by 14. (1 kw of heat is required
for every 14 cubic metres.)
With metric measurements, just measure the length, width & height of the room. Multiply these
together (L x W x H) to get cubic metres. Then divide this figure by 14.
This is based upon having an indoor temperature of 21°-22° (70°F) when outside temperature
is 0°C (32°F)
Please bear in mind the number of windows, doors etc. can have a marginal effect so it is best
to slightly over rather than under estimate the output required.
Apart from deciding how much heat output you will require from your stove, you will also
need to consider what fuel you will be using. Although a majority are multifuel (i.e. will
burn wood or coal without adapting the stove) there are wood only stoves on the market and in
some cases these can be converted to use coal with the aid of a multifuel conversion kit (
supplied as an extra). However be aware as some woodburners cannot be converted.
The next thing is features of the stove. Are you looking for a stove that will just burn and give out the heat
or one that is more efficient and will provide more heat from the same amount of fuel? If you
are looking for a more cleaner, efficient stove then consider a stove that has the Cleanburn system.
Also consider the air wash system. This helps to keep the glass cleaner so
that the view of the fire can be seen for longer through the glass door(s). Today most stoves
are built with air wash system as standard however there are some that are not.
Stove Installation
As from 1st April 2002 virtually all installations of Stoves, Fireplaces & chimneys will require
the HOUSEHOLDER to make an application for approval under building regulations and the payment
of the appropriate fee (around £50-£100 + VAT depending on the Local Authority)
The above information comes under the Building Regulations Part J 2002 & Statutory
Instrument No.440 of 5th March 2002.
Please Note: Kingsworthy Foundry do not install stoves but we do recommend only fitters who
are HETAS registered.
Also the installer must fix a notice by the electrical fuse box stating what the hearth
and flue are suitable for.
It is a criminal offence not to get approval and could invalidate your Home insurance.
The exception to this rule is to use an installer who is a member of HETAS and who is therefore,
approved as self certifying.
